A Washington State Department of Commerce policy advisor put on a Doctor Doom mask in front of Seattle’s Public Safety Committee. Underneath the costume, Clifford Cawthon told the council what the Seattle Police Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC) already integrates: CCTV + body-worn cameras + geolocation + ALPR + shot detection + CAD. Sixty-two municipal cameras streaming live.[1]
What the headlines missed: the committee had already voted to shift $250,000 away from CCTV expansion the month before. The measure only needs full council approval to take effect.[1][2]
( the outrage today is about 1,000 cameras; the cut already happened on 62 )
Seattle didn’t cut the policy. Didn’t cut the analytics. It cut the purchase of more cameras, mid-budget cycle. The first case on record where a major US city council defunds the camera line item itself, not its derivatives.
Every time I review a municipal CCTV deployment for tv4agent, the question no one asks is: how many more cameras will you buy before asking how many you already have? Because when your RTCC already cross-references ALPR with body-worn and gunshot detection, each new camera adds an integration, not a capability. The next LATAM budget question isn’t how many millions in cameras — it’s whether your procurement office is auditing what the cameras you already own are seeing.
P.D. How many of your city’s cameras are recording today without the council being able to answer what footage they’re capturing?
